Today friend of the blog Kevin Sully arrives in Eugene. Kevin ventured north to Eugene in order to attend the Prefontaine Classic, the most prestigious track meet in North America. Kevin is a big fan of track and field, and in his prime he managed to post times that would beat even the best high school girl.
I myself however am not a fan of track and field, and I get disgusted when I hear people talk about how great the sport is.
The problem with Track and Field is that all the competitors in it are failures at other sports. In America if young people are good athletes they play either football or basketball, not track. The athletes that end up in track are the kids who get cut from those two sports. The kids who cant catch, throw, shoot, block, or remember the plays are the kids that end up running track. No young athlete in America grows up wanting to run track. They grow up wanting to play football or basketball and are forced to participate in track when they fail at the sports they grow up loving.
The perfect example of this phenomenon is the X-man Xavier Carter who won the 100, 200, and 400 meters at the last NCAA championship, yet he couldn't get on the football field for the LSU football team. He only turned to track after his failure on the football field. How am I supposed to take track seriously when it only attracts athletes who turn to it after failing at other sports.
Watching a running events can be fun, but fun in the same way that watching a JV basketball game is fun.
